Chapter Fifteen
David James OâHara could be a very impressive young bully when he tried. His face was lean and hard beneath a short crop of reddish hair. He moved with a catlike swiftness, swaggered convincingly, swore and gambled, wore a Colt .44 low on his hip, thonged to his leg, and spoke deprecatingly of every gunman who ever rode within a hundred miles of Kellville.
There had been a few shootings in the little town but, somehow, Dave OâHara was never around when they occurred. He was twenty-three years old and still believed in his own courage because it had never been tried. The one man who had challenged OâHara had left town without fighting and thus strongly increased OâHaraâs opinion of himself.
It was about two-thirty in the afternoon. OâHara was sitting at a back table in the Zorilla talking to Joe Sutton who was losing at cards and arguing.
âYou kiddinâ, Sutton?â OâHara said, putting down his card with a slap. âHeâs cold-footed. If he ainât scared oâ Robby, why donât he wear a gun?â
Sutton swallowed. âWell, why donât he?â OâHara challenged.
âHe wouldnât say,â Sutton answered.
âYâmean you asked him?â OâHara looked up in surprise from his hand.
âYeah,â said Joe Sutton, âI ast him yestiday morninâ butââ
âBut he wouldnât tell ya,â OâHara finished. âCourse he wouldnât tell ya. Think a manâs gonna come right out and admit heâs yella? Play your card.â
Sutton licked his lips and looked worriedly at his hand, deeply troubled by the impending crumble of faith.
âWell, you shouldâve seen him,â he said then, looking up. âYou shouldâve seen him do the border roll and . . . and the shift. You know, tossinâ his iron from one hand to the other. It was so fast I couldnât hardly see it.â He swallowed at OâHaraâs unresponsive stare. âThatâs how fast it was,â he repeated weakly.
âSo what does that mean?â OâHara asked. âAnybody can do tricks with a gun when theyâs no one facinâ âem. Iâd like tâsee him do gun tricks with another guy throwinâ down on him.â
Sutton swallowed. âWell . . .â he said but that was all. He swallowed again and played the wrong card.
âHim and that cocklebur outfit oâ his,â OâHara muttered. âHeâs no betterân a sheep herder.â His fingers tightened on the dog-eared cards. âLivinâ on his repitation, thatâs what heâs tryinâ tâdo. Thinks he can play around with any girl he wants cause he has a repitation. Well, Robbyâll show âim.â
Joe Sutton shook his head. âYâthink heâll really go after Benton?â he asked.
OâHara pointed a finger at Sutton. âYou bet ya damn life he will,â he said. âThen weâll see how good olâ law-dog Benton is. Bet he wonât even put on a gun!â
âWhat else could he do?â Sutton asked, faintly.
âHide, most likely,â OâHara said. âHide on his ranch like a yella hound.â
Sutton looked pained. Then he looked up and said, âUh-oh. Watch out.â
OâHara looked toward the doors which were just swinging shut behind John Bentonâs tall form.
âWhataya mean, watch out?â he said, a little more loudly than heâd intended.
